GPA (Global Privacy Assembly)

The Global Privacy Assembly first met in 1979 as the International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners. The Assembly has been the premier global forum for data protection and privacy authorities for more than four decades. The Assembly seeks to provide leadership at international level in data protection and privacy. It does this by connecting the efforts of more than 130 data protection and privacy authorities from across the globe.

The Global Privacy Assembly’s vision is an environment in which privacy and data protection authorities around the world are able effectively to act to fulfil their mandates, both individually and in concert, through diffusion of knowledge and supportive connections.

The Assembly seeks:

- To be an outstanding global forum for privacy and data protection authorities.

- To disseminate knowledge, and provide practical assistance, to help authorities more effectively to perform their mandates.

- To provide leadership at international level in data protection and privacy.

- To connect and support efforts at domestic and regional level, and in other international forums, to enable authorities better to protect and promote privacy and data protection.

Strategic Priorities 2019 – 2021:

a. Advancing Global Privacy in a Digital Age

  • Work towards a global regulatory environment with clear and consistently high standards of data protection.

b. Maximizing the Assembly’s voice and influence

  • Enhance Assembly’s role and voice in wider digital policy.

  • Strengthen relationships with other international bodies and networks advancing data protection and privacy issues, including through observer arrangements.

c. Capacity Building for the Assembly and its Members

  • Support Members’ shared learning from experiences, strategies and best practice from around the world, including cooperation tools.

Through the Deputy Superintendence for the Protection of Personal Data, the Superintendence of Industry and Commerce participates in the following three working groups

  • Digital Citizen and Consumer Working Group (DCCWG).

The objective of the DCCWG is to produce a report/study that examines the complementary issues and tensions between privacy and competition authorities by conducting, in large part, interviews with competition officials. This will allow the DCCWG to gain insight into the unique perspectives and experiences of antitrust authorities on issues related to this intersection.
SIC currently is working at the “Deep Dive” which is one of the core elements of the DCCWG. This initiative is being held by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) supported also as an intermediary by the International Affairs Group and Data Protection Superintendence of the SIC with the Latin-American authorities.

  • International Enforcement Cooperation Working Group (IEWG)

SIC is currently working at the IEWG whose main goal is to update the Handbook on enforcement cooperation of the GPA.

The SIC is part of the GPA Translation Network that is currently working to translate documents, guides and other materials related with GPA 2021 Conference that will take place in Mexico on October 18 -21
