The Superintendence of Industry and Commerce (SIC) of Colombia, making use of its powers as the maximum authority in legal metrology, issued the Resolution 88918 of December 28, 2017, which establishes the new technical regulation applicable to taximeters (a mechanical or electronic measuring device usually installed in so-called taxis, similar to an odometer. It measures the amount to be charged in relation to the time that elapses during the journey).
As of July 1, 2018, all taximeters, domestic or imported, must comply with the quality requirements required by the technical regulations, in order to ensure reliable and accurate measures in the provision of taxi service. Therefore, as of that date, the new taximeters that are installed must have a certificate that demonstrates compliance with these requirements.
The taximeters must be installed in certified workshops that guarantee the correct installation and operation, and must have seals that prevent the subsequent manipulation of the instrument.
