Rice form la Meseta from Ibague

Rice from the Meseta of Ibagué and Coffee from Santander now protected in the European Union

10 Mayo, 2021

The Superintendence of Industry and Commerce (SIC), in its role as national authority for Industrial Property, was notified that the denominations of origin “Rice form la Meseta from Ibague” and “Coffee from Santander” obtained protection in the European Union under the Trade Agreement signed between the European Union and Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.

The decision was adopted by the Trade Committee at the session held between the EU and Colombia. This decision amends Subparagraph a) "Geographical Indications of Colombia for agricultural products and foodstuffs, wines, spirituous beverages and aromatized wines" of Appendix 1 of Annex XIII of the Trade Agreement, in order to include the two new Colombian geographical indications.

The adoption of this act by the Trade Committee implies that these two denominations of origin that designate products originating in our country obtain protection in the territory of the European Union, joining the other 11 Colombian denominations of origin that have achieved this protection by virtue of the Trade Agreement, as well as the denomination of origin “Colombian Coffee” that was registered in the European Union in 2007.

These are the 13 designations of origin that designate agricultural and food products originating in Colombia and that are currently protected in the European Union:
•    Arroz de la Meseta de Ibagué
•    Café de Santander
•    Café de Colombia
•    Cholupa del Huila
