The SIC attended the Commemoration of the 125th Anniversary of the Madrid System – WIPO

The Deputy Superintendent for Industrial Property, Mr. José Luis Londoño Fernández, participated on behalf of the SIC in the event named “Brands and the Madrid International Trademark System - Commemorating the 125th Anniversary of the Madrid System (1891 – 2016)”. This event was organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and took place in Qingdao, China, from November 15 to 16 of 2016.

The objective of this meeting was to gather high-level officials of IP authorities around the world who are members of the Madrid International Trademark System, in order to celebrate its 125 years and discuss its impacts on the economic development during its existence. Colombia played a representative role in this scenario, because it was the first Latin American country to join the Madrid System and its implementation has been very successful.

Mr. Londoño, through his interventions, presented before the international community the good experiences that Colombia has had in the implementation of this System, which in turn helped WIPO, as the International Registry Office, to position and promote the use of this mechanism. The Madrid System, it is worth highlighting, serves as a growth engine for Colombian and Latin American entrepreneurs in their natural markets, and also serves to boost the development of companies in Asian markets, which are having an increasing interest in Latin American economies.
