The Director of Distinctive Signs, Mrs. María José Lamus Becerra, attended the meeting titled "Subregional meeting of trademark experts of the Central American countries and the Dominican Republic to establish collaboration mechanisms for the administration of Trademark System", which was organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) with the collaboration of the National Industrial Property Office of the Dominican Republic (ONAPI). This event took place in the city of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, from December 5 to 7 of 2016.
Some of the main purposes of this meeting were: (i) to submit the revised version of the “Harmonized Manual on Trademark Criteria for Industrial Property Offices of Central American Countries”, (ii) to present and accept a website in this regard, and (iii) to continue discussions on different aspects related to the possible implications in the management of trademarks in the context of the International Trademark System.
Mrs. Lamus Becerra was invited to participate in this meeting considering that the program was linked to the functions she performs as Director of Distinctive Signs of the SIC. During her interventions and contributions, she presented the procedure for the international registration of trademarks in Colombia and the role of the national office in this field. During the sessions and meetings, discussions were held on the Legal Development of the Madrid System for the International Registration of Trademarks, which has a great relevance bearing in mind that Colombia has been part of this Treaty since last August 29, 2012.
